The History behind MotilityCount APS

In 2010, Jacob Møllenbach and Steen Laursen got an ambitious idea: They wanted to develop a home test that could measure men’s sperm quality, namely measure the concentration of progressive* motile sperm cells compared to the existing tests on the market that measure total sperm count.

* Progressive motile sperm are the only type of sperm that can fertilize a woman’s eggs in a natural way.

They both have more than 20 years of experience in fertility treatment and artificial insemination – Steen as a researcher at the Danish Hospital Rigshospitalet and later as co-owner of a fertility clinic in Fredericia and Jacob as R&D Manager.

In 2011, the project had come so far that an actual company was established – called MotilityCount ApS.

In 2015, the goal was reached: They completed the development of the world’s first home test, which provide the man with a valid answer to his fertility potential. Men can now measure their sperm quality without stress, conveniently at their own home. The product is sold under the brand name SwimCount®.

A total of 5 years of development and hard work lead to a patent for the SwimCount® Membrane Swim-Up Technology in 2014, a CE mark approval by the European Union in 2015 and finally an FDA Clearance in 2019.

2022 - Today

Partnering with 2San in 2022, the SwimCount® brand became widely available at retailers across the US. 2San is an accelerator of innovation in home healthcare, bringing products from concept to consumer, backed by a foundation of industry best practices, and subject-matter experts.
